Kevin Gausman made his Cubs debut and after a first inning injury scare, he was lights out. Gausman got hit on his foot in the first inning but decided he was able to stay in. He finished with 7 IP, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 K's and just 1 walk.
Gausman mentioned in a post-trade interview he couldn't wait to pitch with this defense behind him and they did not disappoint. Nico Hoerner made a great web gem play stopping a base hit and making a throw from his back to get the out. And Ian Happ made a terrific catch in left field to keep the Royals at bay.
The Cubs now improve to 18-6 in their last 24 road games and have won 5 in a row. With Milwaukee losing to the Minnesota Twins, the Cubs now trail the Brew crew by 4.5 games in the NL Central.
Pedro Ramirez continued his dream start to his MLB career going 2-for-4 with his second career HR.
Gausman becomes the first Cubs pitcher with 7+ IP in his Cubs debut since 2017.
While good as usual on defense, Happ's offensive struggles continued. Went 0-for-4 with 4 Ks, and now has 22 K's in his last 52 AB's, He seems as lost at the plate as anybody has in recent memory.
